How Fashion Is My Vehicle for Expression

As a queer woman, fashion has always been extremely important to me. From the clothes I wear to observing trends and learning about the history of fashion and different designers, it is a medium that comes with a lot of power. It also serves as a mode of expression. Marc Jacobs, Alexander McQueen, Gianni Versace, Zac Posen, Tom Ford, Patricia Field, and many more, queer designers have always been a driving force in the fashion world for decades. (Some new and upcoming great designers worth mentioning are Patrick Church & LaQuan Smith) These designers in particular have informed the way I approach fashion over the last decade. They also made me really think about the power of small details in outfits and what accessories can do.

Being able to present myself to the world in a very specific way in what I wear has always been important to me. While it might not look completely thought out to some people, there is always an intention behind an outfit and the details within it. Having elements like a rainbow tote bag, bandanna, shirt, pin, or other pieces that express aspects of my queer identity for me signal to the world that I am proud of who I am and that I’m not afraid to show it. Even the materials I choose to wear together can add a new mood to an outfit.

Wraps, scarves, and pashminas are accessories that I have loved to use when both dressing an outfit up or down. Details such as the material of the scarf as well as the pattern can add a bold dynamic to an outfit. Whether it's a textured cheetah print scarf, a silk wrap in black, or a style in seafoam green, scarves can help bring a different aesthetic to a look overall.

The artisanal Crosby scarf is one that is the best of both worlds. It features a patchwork of bold patterns, textures, velvets, and silks, making it the perfect statement piece for any look. Featuring beautiful reds, greens, deep blues, and even more color on the edges, the scarf gives way to a cascading mosaic of patterns.  It’s the combination of both sophistication and sass that sets this scarf apart from the crowd and will make you stand out when you wear it.

The Lovejoy in black velvet and blue floral silk oblong is definitely a conversation starter. It’s like wrapping yourself in a cloud. From the gorgeous watercolor floral pattern that features lush greens and blues on one side to the super lush black velvet on the other, this scarf is one you can wear for every occasion with ease.

The elegant details and striking patterns allow me to celebrate my queer identity, while simultaneously evoking my personal style. Having that one piece of clothing that can help make your whole look feel special is important, These scarves make me feel like my true self, which is truly priceless.

The next time you're looking for something a little bit different in your wardrobe, consider accessorizing with a scarf or wrap. Not only can they help break up a monochromatic look, scarves can be tied in a number of fun and unique ways. Find pieces of clothing that help you spark that bigger sense of personal joy and make you feel great about who you are!
